Surf lifesavers are Aussie icons, thanks to TV shows like Bondi Rescue and the images of bronzed gods like Guy Leech and Ky Hurst stamped into our national consciousness. But it’s easy to forget just how vital these heroes are to our safety – every year, they rescue around 12,000 people, provide emergency care to 35,000 and give safety advice to over 600,000 more. Next time you spot a lifesaver in action, why not say thanks in person? Or check out the national surf lifesaving championships to see them in action en masse – the ‘Aussies’ will be held at Scarborough, WA from 31 March to 6 April 2014. See sls.com.au for more information.
