6: Discover the underwater world of rockpools

There’s just something magical about paddling and poking around in these little pockets of marine life that bookend most Australian beaches. Teeming with fantastical creatures – spiky sea urchins, marine snails and slugs, funny little hermit crabs and tiny fish darting to and fro – rockpools are fascinating underwater playgrounds that mesmerise everyone from toddlers to grown-ups for hours on end.

You’ll find rockpools dotted about everywhere, and everyone has their favourites – but some particularly pretty specimens can be found on Lord Howe Island (NSW), at Stokes Bay on Kangaroo Island (SA), Champagne Rock Pools on Fraser Island (Qld), Avoca Beach on the Central Coast (NSW), Greens Pool in WA, and Mimosa Rocks National Park on the NSW South Coast.
